Shockwave
Therapy

What is Shockwave or extra corporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) ?

Shockwave therapy (SWT) involves the use of acoustic waves to deliver mechanical energy to targeted tissues in the body. These waves travel faster than sound and can exert therapeutic effects through their high-pressure peaks and low amplitude negative waves

This produces a physiological response in the tissue causing increased blood flow and therefore increases the metabolism in the injured tissue. This essentially causes an enhanced tissue repair response.

Conditions Commonly Treated with ESWT:

Uses in Physiotherapy

Evidence suggests that ESWT takes the tissue from a chronic to a more acute state. This can be described as “kick starting” the healing process by stimulating the tissue from its stalled healing state.

The National Institute of Clinical Effectiveness endorses the use of ESWT for some slow healing musculoskeletal conditions. It has been found to be most beneficial for long standing tendon injuries.

Treatment of Musculoskeletal Conditions

  • Tendinopathies: Effective in treating various tendinopathies, including Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder, and tennis elbow.

  • Bone Healing: Promotes bone healing in conditions like fractures and non-unions.

  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome: Provides pain relief and improves muscle function.

Benefits

  • Non-Invasive: Provides a non-surgical option for treating chronic pain and promoting healing.

  • Minimal Side Effects

  • Quick Recovery: Patients can often return to their normal activities shortly after treatment.

  • Pain Reduction: Effective in reducing pain associated with various musculoskeletal conditions.

  • Functional Improvement: Enhances functionality and mobility in affected areas.

  • Tissue Repair and Regeneration: Promotes tissue healing through angiogenesis and collagen synthesis.
